Fun Foods for Kids: Mushroom Village Caprese Salad!

This has been on my to-do list of Cute Foods for way too long. I finally bought the ingredients last night and went to work with my creation! I wanted to make those red cap mushrooms that the Smurfs lived in! As a child, I always dreamed of living in one of those, who wouldn't love that?

Things you will need:
  1. Cherry tomatoes
  2. Basil leaves with stems
  3. Mozzarella cheese
  4. Olive oil
  5. Kosher salt & pepper
Grab your yummy cherry tomatoes.
They are so cute to photograph!
Fresh mozzarella cheese...
Slice the cheese into 0.5 inch thick slices. Make half inch wide rectangles for the base of the mushroom. The length should be about an inch or so.
Cut your cheery tomatoes in halves...
Remove the pulp of the tomatoes with a paring knife or small spoon...
Use the basil stems to decorate the plate as 'trees' around your mushroom village. Place a few leaves without stems around the mushroom houses. Those will look like fallen leaves ready to be eaten.
Keep the bases of the mushrooms a bit wide so that it sits well. I used bigger slices of mozzarella cheese in the background to hold my basil 'trees' I drizzled olive oil on top of my mushroom caps and sprinkled kosher salt on top so that the salt stuck to it. That mimicked the cute little white spots that mushrooms naturally have. Add little 'doors' and 'windows' for more cuteness.
This will please anyone that loves caprese salads. However, I presented this to my kids hoping they would try it. One of them stared at it amazed but then ran away.  The other one ate all the cherry caps and cheese in no time, he didn't even look and appreciate my hard work! It was pretty funny. Can't please them all but this was so fun to make and it was super delicious!

Check out my other popular creations. Enjoy!
